Abstract

Conventional laboratory testing for Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) determination is often destructive, complex, and costly. The Schmidt Hammer provides a rapid, economical, non-destructive alternative through Rebound Value measurements. While this correlation has been extensively studied globally, its application to the sandstone of the Meluhu Formation in Southeast Sulawesi remains insufficiently investigated. This study employed a quantitative approach combining field measurements using an N-type Schmidt Hammer at three locations with laboratory UCS testing following ISRM standards. Results showed Rebound Values ranging from 14.8 to 22.4, classifying the rock as "Very Soft" to "Extremely Soft", while UCS values varied widely from 10 MPa to 111.89 MPa, categorized as "Very Low" to "High" strength. Exponential regression analysis yielded the correlation y = 0.0639e^0.3305x with R² = 0.8906, indicating that 89.06% of UCS variation can be explained by Rebound Values. These findings confirm the Schmidt Hammer's effectiveness as a non-destructive estimation tool for the Meluhu Formation sandstone, though caution is warranted due to the formation's heterogeneous characteristics.
